Excel Accessibility: An AI-Built Interactive Course

Portfolio working preview | 12-part course | Approximately 85 minutes

What if an instructional designer could create a complete, custom learning experience without first becoming a traditional programmer?

I designed and directed this interactive Excel Accessibility course using AI-assisted development, also known as vibe coding. Through detailed prompting, testing, and revision, I turned my learning strategy and accessibility expertise into a fully coded course that can be published online and completed on desktop or mobile devices.

About the course

Excel Accessibility teaches learners how to create spreadsheets that are easier to understand, navigate, and use. The course addresses workbook structure, worksheet organization, tables, headers, clear instructions, color and contrast, images, charts, alternative text, links, keyboard access, screen readers, Excel’s Accessibility Checker, manual testing, and final review.

The experience includes interactive process activities, matching exercises, demonstrations, immediate feedback, a final assessment, trusted resources, and a downloadable checklist.

My role

I led the entire learning experience, including:

  • Learning strategy and course structure

  • Instructional and interaction design

  • Plain-language content

  • Accessibility requirements

  • Visual and media direction

  • AI prompting and iterative refinement

  • Quality review and accessibility checks

  • Publishing and final source-code packaging

AI generated much of the code and supported content and media production, but I made the decisions about what learners needed, how the course should work, what required correction, and whether the finished experience met my standards.

Tools and methods

ChatGPT Work, AI-assisted coding, React, TypeScript, CSS, custom AI-generated imagery, responsive design, keyboard testing, contrast review, semantic HTML, reduced-motion support, captions, transcripts, and iterative quality assurance

Current build status

This is the first complete draft of the course and is being shared as a working portfolio preview. The full course structure, lessons, activities, assessments, checklist, and resource section are now available.

I am still adding and refining several demonstration videos, improving the AI voice quality, and completing the text-to-speech experience. Those updates are coming very soon. As with any learning product, I am continuing to test, improve, and strengthen it based on how it performs for real learners.

This project shows both what AI can produce quickly and what an experienced instructional designer must contribute to make that output accurate, accessible, useful, and worth a learner’s time.
